Swimming and Water Safety Program
Once again, it is time for our Swimming and Water Safety Program.
As an island state surrounded by coast line, as well as inland waters and other aquatic environments, swimming and water safety are necessary life skills that add to our health, fitness and wellbeing. Activities such as fishing, boating, water play, swimming, surfing, diving etc. require swimming and water safety skills.
In acknowledgement of the importance that water safety and swimming capabilities play throughout our lives, the Education Department mandates that all students learn to be safe and competent in water environments, as a compulsory component of the primary curriculum. We plan carefully to ensure that every child is made to feel safe and relaxed during this program. In 2021 all students in Years 2 to Year 6 will participate in the Swimming and Water Safety Program.
For the lessons, students will be organised into ability groupings so that the most effective teaching and learning can occur. Jenny Godfrey will be the Teacher in Charge. The dates for the program are:
Monday February 22 to Friday March 5 with Wednesday 24 being Launceston Cup Day.

The Swimming and Water Safety Program runs for two weeks for each grade group. This will mean that your son/daughter will need to bring along the following items every day throughout their program.
- Swimming gear – including bathers and swimming cap (supplied).
- Towel and plastic bag to put wet clothes in.
- Any medication (e.g. asthma medication) that may be needed at the poolside.
Please note:
Goggles: The use of swimming goggles is not encouraged. Students who are unable to swim without goggles cannot be assessed on all components of the program, in particular the survival components. If you feel that your child is unable to swim without goggles then an explanatory note will need to be sent along.
Change Rooms: Parents are welcome to attend the program. However, students are encouraged to be independent dressers and therefore parents are requested to stay out of the change rooms.
Photos: Due to privacy issues photos must be restricted to individual pictures of your child.
Swimming Caps: For health and safety reasons, it is Department of Education policy for all students to wear caps. These will be supplied at the beginning of the program and kept in classrooms after each session.
Jewellery: For safety reasons, ear studs and dangly earrings are not to be worn in the pool. Sleepers are allowed.
We are looking forward to all the children progressing in their swimming and water safety skills this year. If you have any questions regarding the program, please feel free to contact the school office.
Please ensure you have returned the Major Excursion Consent and Medical Information Form and the Consent form for Aquatic (water-based) Activity to allow your child to participate in the Swimming and Water Safety Program.
Thank you
