Dear Parents/Guardians
Meet and Greet
Thank you to all the parents, guardians and students who attended the ‘Meet and Greet’ barbecue on Tuesday. Included in this week’s newsletter are photos from the evening. Parents/guardians are most welcome to speak to teachers during the year about their child’s progress and learning. Please contact the school when wishing to make an appointment with a teacher 6382 0500 or contact them on their DoE email.
Reports
In Term 1 Progress Reports will be sent home which provide information on how your child has settled into school.
It has been a positive start to the 2021 school year. All of our students are wearing school uniform and many of them have received merit certificates for displaying the school values of Respect, Aspiration, Courage and Growth. Our school values are taught in class teacher time and students are regularly recognised for displaying the values both inside and outside of the classroom.
Learn to Swim
Learn to Swim has started for all Year 2 to 6 students. Port Dalrymple School funds two weeks of learn to swim for the Year 2 students and it is great to see all of them participating and trying their very best.
A notice has been sent home with students which details the arrangements for the 2021 Swimming Carnival Years 3-10.
Reminder
A reminder to families that teachers are not on duty until 8.30am of a morning and students should not be at school earlier than this.
The school car parks are extremely busy of a morning and afternoon. Please drive slowly in the car parks and be aware that many young children are getting in and out of cars.
Students who ride their bike to school must ensure that they are wearing helmets.
Breakfast Program
The Breakfast Program will operate out of the junior school kitchen near the Stephanie Alexander Garden and all students Prep-12 are welcome to breakfast. The program operates Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Information
The school newsletter is published at the end of every second week. Please take the time to read the school newsletter as it contains important dates and messages and it’s where we celebrate the achievements of our students.

On behalf of the Port Dalrymple School community we would like to thank South32 and the George Town Council for providing the financial resource that has enabled the school to purchase laptop computers for students.
The initiative will ensure students, primarily in Years 3-9, will have a device for learning which they can take home. It will enable students to stay connected to their learning, to the wider school community and provide opportunities for teachers to support and extend students learning throughout the year.
Families of students in Years 3-10 who do not have a suitable device for learning can ring the general office to loan a school laptop. The general office will complete a loan form for the student and then the device can be collected at any time from Monday – Friday during school hours 9.00am-3.00pm. Please ensure you follow social distancing procedures when you enter the school administration area.
Australian School-based Apprenticeships (ASbA)
At Port Dalrymple we have a number of students who undertake an Australian School- based Apprenticeship (ASbA). This is an employment-based training arrangement where a student in year 10, 11 or 12 can combine employment with training and school as an apprentice or trainee.
Our students benefit from the ASbAs as they are able to continue to attend school at the same time as undertaking a nationally recognised qualification whilst in paid employment. The qualification is usually at Certificate II or Certificate III level.
ASbAs are an effective way for students to study to gain their TCE and gain a ‘head start’ in a vocational pathway in the George Town municipality. They also allow students to gain experience and skills in the workplace and find out if a particular career is of interest to them.
Ethan in Year 12 is currently working at Kempe Engineering two days a week. He is undertaking a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade. He enjoys combining his subjects at school with his workplace learning and looks forward to this rolling into a fulltime apprenticeship after Year 12.
We will feature our other ASbA students in their workplace over the next few weeks.
We are grateful to our local industries and businesses who provide valuable mentoring and training for our students.
For further information please contact Libby Williams at Port Dalrymple School.
Daily PE and Lunchtime Activities
The YMCA have already been to help us with some training as well as the creation of some brand new activities so that we are ready to lead all of the students in the Prep to Year 5 space.
When we are leading the 10 minutes each morning we are developing our confidence. We are building our knowledge, teamwork and cooperation. We are also developing our skills to be strong, independent and be able to work withthe teachers and staff to lead the small groups with all the activities we are creating.
The teachers, students and our fellow friends have a lot to look forward to this year because we have a lot of new, fun and exciting games planned.

Home reading is important in supporting students’ reading fluency. Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly and with expression. Reading fluently helps children to gain meaning from what they read. Reading a text more than once helps build this fluency and understanding. Please encourage your child to read their home readers 2-3 times to help build their fluency.
Your child/ren will bring home a reader that is a couple of levels below their reading level in class and the reason for this is to practise their reading on an easier text to become more fluent readers. The more students read, the better readers they will be. Encourage your child to read every night and record this in their Primary Communication Reading Record.
We look forward to presenting home reading certificates at the next Junior school assembly.
