Dear Parents/Guardians
Last week we had our Student Leadership Induction Assembly for 2021. At this assembly we induct and welcome both senior and junior Student Leaders. The guest speaker for the assembly was Shane Power, General Manager of the GeorgeTown Council. Mr Power discussed with the students the wonderful projects planned for the GeorgeTown community, one being the construction of the mountain bike trail. Parent/guardians were then invited to a special morning tea in the school café.

Last week I was able to attend the ‘Reset’ program. Reset is sponsored by the Hawthorn Football Club, DoE and Early Intervention Police. Our school is very fortunate to be one of the first schools involved. The program focuses on developing resilience and leadership skills in an outdoor environment. The 10 boys selected did an amazing job last week walking through the Gorge in Launceston and carrying very large tins of water. Best of luck boys with the abseiling!

Over the past four weeks of Term 1 on a Friday, a mix of students from year 7-10 have been involved in the RESET Program. The program aims to develop leadership skills, resilience, a growth mindset and teamwork in an outdoor environment. Students have been catching a bus early of a morning into UTAS stadium were various team challenges have been completed. These have included keeping a marble air born, Taiko Drumming and a string balance challenge. On one occasion our destination was the Cataract Gorge where students were required to carry some excess baggage. This included students carrying water containers and our injured mascot named Nugget along the hilly track in warm conditions. As a teacher involved in the program, I was proud of how the students conducted themselves, the team work they displayed and the physical effort given. Before the Term finishes students will have the opportunity to “reach some great heights”. The program will recommence in Term 2 with many more amazing learning opportunities planned ahead.
On Monday the 15th of March Shane from Ride2School Tasmania came to Port to run Bike Ed sessions with students in Years 3-6. Shane spoke about bike safety, the importance of checking to see if your helmet fits properly and controlling your bike. Students were able to bring their own bike or scooter to ride or use one of the 10 mountain bikes Shane brought with him. Shane will be coming back during Term 2 for a follow up session.
Have you heard? Grease is the word and our students from Grades 7-12 will be bringing you this iconic show in September. Auditions are underway and the excitement is building, with everyone involved looking forward to sharing this amazing show with our friends, family and community.

The Year 6 leaders have been lucky enough to have Kate and Kem from the YMCA come down to Geogetown every Thursday lunchtime to teach us new and fun games. These games have included:
We love teaching and leading the younger students new skills, lately focusing on basketball skills and drills. Basketball has been a focus because of the Basketball tournament that some of the year 5/6 students are participating in every Friday at South Georgetown Primary. We had our first game last week, Port was undefeated for both games, we are the ones to beat! We are learning to be leaders and we would love feedback from all students and staff about our leadership skills. Thank you Miss Petty for your lovely email and Mrs Miller for always providing feedback to us. Thank you all and we look forward to great Term 2.

Our MacqLit groups started this term and it has been exciting to see all students developing their reading skills and confidence. The school values of Growth, Aspiration, Respect and Courage have been evident when walking through the rooms. A huge thank you to our teacher assistants who are supporting these students to develop their reading skills.
Throughout Term 1 the Year 5/6 classes have been looking at famous structures and historical buildings throughout the world.
ICT lessons have been our research lessons learning about the important skills of:
- Researching on the Internet
- Copyright
- Copying and pasting
- Using the Snipping Tool
- Saving all our documents in the correct folders
Design and Technology lessons have incorporated our knowledge from our ICT lessons and we have sketched the famous structures and buildings from throughout the world. We have looked at timelines of when the famous buildings were built in comparison to Australia’s settlement; linking our knowledge with our HASS unit in our classrooms.
Below are some of our sketches from our lessons….
Students in Prep - Year 6 are registered to participate in this year’s Premiers Reading Challenge. The challenge is to read 10 books or more during Term 2. This year we are aiming to have our highest number of students to complete the challenge.
Next term please record the names of the books your child reads on the Challenge Reading Log. If you need more reading logs, please ask your child’s teacher.
On behalf of the Port Dalrymple School community we would like to thank South32 and the George Town Council for providing the financial resource that has enabled the school to purchase laptop computers for students.
The initiative will ensure students, primarily in Years 3-9, will have a device for learning which they can take home. It will enable students to stay connected to their learning, to the wider school community and provide opportunities for teachers to support and extend students learning throughout the year.
Families of students in Years 3-10 who do not have a suitable device for learning can ring the general office to loan a school laptop. The general office will complete a loan form for the student and then the device can be collected at any time from Monday – Friday during school hours 9.00am-3.00pm. Please ensure you follow social distancing procedures when you enter the school administration area.
