Welcome Back
We have had a great start to the term with students actively engaged in their learning. Term 2 is a busy term with lots coming up including NAPLAN Testing, North East Cup, Cross Country and School Photos. Dates for families are placed on the school website which can be found at https://portdalrymple.education.tas.edu.au.
Congratulations
Our school promotes the values of Aspiration, Courage, Growth and Respect. We would like to recognise Ellie for displaying these values, particularly her Aspiration with her achievement in being selected in the Tasmanian under 17 state netball team. Congratulations Ellie.
Anzac Day Service
On Sunday the 25th of April, our students attended the Anzac Day Service in George Town with student leaders being flag bearers and laying a wreath for the school. We thank staff and students for their attendance on this special day and representing our school with pride.

Cultural Arts is held every Wednesday with Uncle Murray and Marcia from the meenah neenah program for our indigenous students between Grade 1 and 6 exploring traditional and contemporary art forms.
This week students studied the history of ochre and then did paintings using different coloured ochre.
At the end of Term 1, Students from Kinder – Grade 2 were lucky enough to have Daisy dog and Annette from the Delta Dog Safe program visit the classes and teach students about being safe around dogs.
Students were shown;
- How to recognise whether a dog is feeling scared, angry or happy
- When not to approach a dog
- How to pat a dog safely
- How to behave when confronted with an unknown or aggressive dog.
Vocational Education & Training
VET Classes (Vocational Education & Training)
Students in year 11 and 12 have made a great start to their VET classes in Construction, Hospitality and Engineering Pathways. VET is practical, hands-on learning with an industry/trade focus. Participating in VET courses can provide credit points towards the attainment of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), and/or the attainment of a nationally recognised VET qualification, provide a pathway to further study at university and support the transition from school/study to employment.
Other benefits of participating in VET programs include obtaining practical, hands-on experience from work, gaining familiarity on how workplaces operate, developing employability skills, developing and improving interpersonal skills and opportunities to explore potential career paths.
On Tuesday 27th April, year 7A students headed to the YMCA in Kings Meadows for team building activities.
A BBQ lunch was provided with lots of fun happening with rock climbing, bubble balls and gymnastics.
The National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) was first undertaken as an online test in Tasmania during 2019. Tasmanian schools will again participate in NAPLAN Online this year.
NAPLAN Online provides better assessment and more precise results.
The assessments feature a tailored test design where the questions a student receives will depend on their answers to previous questions.
NAPLAN testing will be held from the 11th to 21st May 2021.
Online testing will be available for each of the NAPLAN year levels (3, 5, 7 and 9).
NAPLAN assessments include four components, Writing, Numeracy, Conventions of Language and Reading. Please note that all Year Three students will be completing a paper-based Writing Test.
Schools will receive reports and results for participants following the completion of the NAPLAN Online assessment window. These Individual Student Reports will have the same format as in previous years. This format is used for every student in Australia.
A parent/carer brochure containing more information about the NAPLAN Online assessments, will be distributed by the school to families of students sitting NAPLAN this year.
If you have further questions, please contact Brenton Gale at the school office on 63820500.
Throughout Term 2, we will be focussing on basketball skills and drills, soccer, skipping with short and long ropes and cooperation with team games. Prep / 1s have been focussing on softballs and bean bags while 1/2s have been learning to skip with the long and short ropes. Every two weeks, we have a meeting with Miss Warren to discuss the timetable, what is working and how we can improve then we update our new roster. Basketball has been a great success. The tournament started last week and the Port Penguins team 1 and 2 were undefeated. We have games every Friday until 5/6 sport starts. For the Year 5/6 students who stay behind here at school, we have the Port Sports Leaders who work with students undertaking Football, Netball, Soccer and Hockey. They are our sports that we will be playing in our Winter Sports Roster. Cross Country starts soon, so get your running legs ready for the laps around Australia that Mrs Petty organises.
Thank you on behalf of the Daily PE leaders. Octavia and Pallas |
Premiers Reading Challenge
All students in years Prep to 6 are registered to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Recently reading logs were sent home with all students in these years for recording completed books on. Please write the titles of the books your child/ren have finished reading at home.
Home Reading
The more students read, the better readers they will be. Encourage your child to read every night and record this in their Primary Communication Reading Record. Please record each night your child reads including the weekends and holidays.
Well done to all the students who received the 25 night reading certificates at the last assembly of Term 1. We look forward to awarding more reading certificates at the next assembly.
Reading Response Certificates
Students in years 5 and 6 are reading everyday and recording this in their classroom reading response journals. We will now be awarding certificates to students after every 25 entries in their reading journals e.g. 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and so on.
