Congratulations to Year 10s Gaining Apprenticeships and ApTSLs (Apprenticeships and Traineeships for School-aged Learners) for 2022
Congratulations to the Tallis and Jack who have gained full apprenticeships and Hayden who has secured an ApTSL at ANZ Bank in Kings Meadows commencing in 2022.
Tallis has gained a full apprenticeship with Vos Constructions undertaking a Certificate III in Carpentry over the next four years. Vos Constructions is one of Tasmania’s leading construction companies. Tallis will commence his apprenticeship in January 2022. As part of the application process, Tallis submitted a handwritten cover letter, resume, his most recent results and a portfolio of his work. Tallis was short listed for a group interview where he impressed the employers, being offered one of the apprenticeship positions. We wish Tallis all the best as he embarks on his apprenticeship next year.
Jack will be undertaking a full apprenticeship with Ali Lees Painting – Abrasive Blasting and Coatings. Jack had two weeks’ work experience where he learnt about the industrial painting trade and different aspects involved in the business. He undertook tasks such as cleaning up, moving pallets, learnt about different thicknesses of paint and had a go at some small painting tasks. Jack enjoyed his work placement and realised this job would be a good fit for him. Jack is looking forward to developing new skills through his apprenticeship, being able to contribute as an employee and is very keen to gain a full trades certificate.
Hayden has been successful in gaining an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander School- based Traineeship for Years 11 and 12 at the ANZ Bank in Kings Meadows. Two positions were advertised in the north. The employer was impressed with Hayden’s resume, cover letter and his performance at interview. Hayden will combine his studies at Newstead College with his ApTSL which he will undertake for one day a week. He will gain a Certificate II in Business, Financial Services or Customer Engagement. Whilst gaining valuable work experience, he will also receive ongoing career support through AFL SportsReady’s Indigenous mentors. He will be able to explore career opportunities with ANZ upon completion of his traineeship. ApTSLs are a great way to combine study with work opportunities and we do extend a big thank you to Matt from SportsReady for his advice and guidance. Well done Hayden!
JCP Empowering Youth Seminar – The Choice is Yours
On Tuesday 12 October students in Years 7-10 participated in JCP Empowering Youth – The Choice is Yours Seminar. We were fortunate to have Will Smith, Director of JCP Youth, lead the seminar and explain to students that they all have the potential to be a leader. Will talked about his journey to leadership and shared stories of youth he works with who have changed the direction of their lives. The Seminar focused on how students can learn to be the best version of themselves and Will provided students with strategies and ideas for how they can make good decisions. Students engaged in interactive activities to learn about the strategies and traits that make a good leader and person. A key thing Will encouraged students to consider is to identify your Top 5 people who influence you and aim to have people on it who offer you value each day and at least one person who is a good influence on you, holds you accountable and who you want to impress so you can be the best version of yourself. He also explained about developing resilience, finding solutions by avoiding emotive reactions and how decisions we make can have an impact on us and others.
Thanks to Collective ed – Beacon Foundation providing the opportunity for our students to be involved in the JCP Empowering Youth Seminar and to Will and his team for a very valuable day.
Here is some feedback from our students about the Seminar:
“I’d give the seminar 5 stars as if was inspiring and I learnt that instead of complaining about problems, just go straight to the solution.” (Harrison, Year 7)
“I learnt that there are many types of people who will react differently when tired or upset.” (Sarah, Year 7)
“I enjoyed the standing up activities and the Hungry, Smart and Humble activity. I also learnt about surrounding myself with good people.” (Brielle, Year 8)
“I learnt not to judge a book by its cover and even if you don’t think you will enjoy something still give it a go. Also you need to be open about your actions and really think about who you hang around with. I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars because he made me realise that all you can do is to try your best and work on yourself to be the best you can be.” (Nartarsha, Year 8)
“I found Will’s advice and main points both intriguing and informative. Some advice that hit for me was to show initiative and do thing that help me to achieve my aspirations.” (Rory, Year 9)
“I found it interesting to learn about Will’s background and his achievements over the years. I though Will kept the seminar engaging while also helping people to learn new ways to improve as a person.” (Zane, Year 9)
“I found it interesting how Will has helped so many people in Tasmania – he has amazing skills to change people’s lives. I learnt not to put yourself through the emotional reactions and get straight to the solution.” (Lily, Year 9)
“I learnt that it is best to not go through the emotional and reaction stage when you have a problem – go straight to the solution as it is much better for yourself and others. Another thing is not to just follow others’ actions just to fit in. He showed us this by getting us all doing the same thing in four minutes.” (Chloe, Year 9)
“I enjoyed how he got us involved and made us more interested and focused in what he was saying. He also gave the facts straight to us on how to become a better person and that we can do anything as long as we work hard. I like the Top 5 People strategy. We had to decide if the five people we are around the most, influence us in a positive or bad way. This was a good strategy that I would use if I thought I was starting to make bad choices.” (Hallie, Year 10)
“Will talked about how anyone can be a leader no matter what your background is. A strategy I found helpful was when we moved about and chose what two words related to us the most out of Hungry, Smart and Humble. Will then spoke to us about the words we picked and how we can improve and be the best version of ourselves.” (Brock, Year 10)
“I enjoyed the physical activities we did and I also enjoyed learning about issues I would not have through about much of until that day. I also learnt that a lot of young people who struggle have found their way through with the help of JCP.” (Charlotte, Year 10)

Year 5-8 Sector Report
The Middle Years Sector Team would like to congratulate our students on how well they have settled back into the routine of school life ready for a busy Term 4. It has been fantastic to see our students following our DoE Values and engaged in their Term 4 learning programs.
JCP Visit
On Tuesday the 12th of October our Grade 7/8 students were fortunate enough to attend a full day seminar with Will Smith and the team from JCP. Throughout the day student's patriciate in a number of activities designed to challenge their way of thinking. Important take aways from the presentation include:
- Identifying the top 5 people you spend the most time with and ensuring that those are the people who are going to bring the best out of you.
- Understanding influence and how the influence of others affect us in everyday life.
- Understanding the concept of ‘what is the story I am telling myself?’ about a situation and considering if that is your perception or reality. Are you believing your moles?
- The power of choice and making sure students make the right choice for them not just what their mates do.
- Two rules of communication: is it positive? Were you present? If a conversation doesn’t answer questions to these two with ‘yes’ then it shouldn’t be spoken about.
Australian of the Year: Will Smith, founder of youth empowerment programs #AOTY2020 #ausoftheyear
6-7 Transition
On Tuesday the 19th of October our transition program for students moving into Grade 7 for 2022 was in full swing again. Students engaged in the hospitality area using our state of the art facilities to make a toasted sandwich and milk shake. In addition to this, students completed a STEM challenge which focused on teamwork, collaboration, communication and resilience. We are looking forward to our full day orientation coming up on Tuesday 9th November where students will learn what it is like to follow a high school timetable and navigate their way around the school.
Congratulations to the following students who received Merit Certificates in our K-6 Assembly

Overview: Important Information
On Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th of October, Port Dalrymple School will be holding the Kinder- Year 10 Athletics Carnival at school. Students in Kinder to Year 1 will have their events on Thursday only (Day 2).
At Port Dalrymple School we provide all students with the opportunity to participate in both traditional track and field and novelty events. Our focus is on participation and students giving their best effort.
The carnival is tabloid style where students rotate around events in year groups which are split into girls and boys. There will be a teacher attached to each group who will supervise for the two days.
The carnival begins at 9:10am. All students are expected to be at school at the normal time. Students will go to class teacher for attendance and will remain in class teacher groups until the first event of the day. The Athletics Carnival is a normal school day and students will be dismissed at 3:00pm
As the carnival is a busy day, there will not be a usual recess and lunch break. Instead, we advise that students snack in-between their events.
There will be a barbecue available and drinks to purchase on the day. Prep and Year 1 students will be able to pre order from the BBQ. This year spectators will be able to purchase food and drinks in line with COVID protocols being adhered to.
We ask that students are dressed appropriately and prepared for all weather conditions. Warm clothing is strongly advised, however as we approach summer and the warmer weather with its higher UV levels, it is imperative that your child has a hat and sunscreen. Hoodies are not an acceptable item of clothing. The school will provide sunscreen; however, we encourage students to bring their own.
House Pride
As a school, we are really trying to build school pride and some friendly rivalry at our sports carnivals. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and display signs/slogans that have been made at school. All students have been allocated a house – Norfolk (blue) and Paterson (white).
First aid and medication
A First aid and medication area will be manned by a staff member on the day. If your child takes regular medication at school, they will be able to access this at the main office and will be supervised as per normal. If you child self-administers medication for asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes etc. Please remind them to pack their medication.
Cancellation of the carnival
A decision by senior staff will be made at 7am if the carnival is to be cancelled due to poor weather. A notice will be posted on the Facebook page as well as a text message sent out so please ensure you check this. If either day is hit by inclement weather, the carnival rain date is Wednesday 3rd November.
Spectators
There will be a designated spectator area, so we invite all parents, grandparents, and friends to come along, and support and we look forward to seeing you there. There will be a QR code check-in sign for all spectators to use in line with normal school visitor requirements. Spectators are asked to sit in the designated seating area 1.5m apart.
If you have any further questions, please contact Mr Sanders at the school on 63820500.
The NHSSA 8 game Basketball Roster commenced in week 1 of term 4 with Port Dalrymple entering a senior boys team in the strong division 2 roster. With most games scheduled to be played at either SGTPS or the Memorial Hall in George Town, these games are very accessible to the boys, parents and spectators.
Our first game was against St Patricks Gold. Our boys got off to a flying start, with great team work and shooting, to lead 16-7 at quarter time. After their sluggish start, St Pats started to kick into gear and by ¾ time St Pats led by one point. A sluggish start to the start of the 4th quarter saw St Pats get out to a 10 point lead before a much improved effort in defense saw Port climb back into the game, although some missed opportunities to score led to the final scores being 43-35 in St Pat’s favour. Logan was excellent in defense and finished with 9 points in offense, while Tallis also finished with 9 points, including two 3-pointers. Jonty and Rory did a great job in their first official game of basketball.
Our next game is Thursday 21st October v Queechy A at SGTPS.
Hello Port Dalrymple! My name is Tom Millen and I am going to be the new school nurse taking over from Leanne Dunne who has moved to the Northern Support School.
I have been working in the Emergency department at the LGH for the last eight years and prior to that was working in remote Central Australian communities as a nurse. I am really excited about coming to Port Dalrymple and becoming a part of your school community. Despite being a nurse, I love to get my hands dirty, playing football, gardening, bushwalking and building stuff are how I stay happy.
I hope to spend the rest of Term 4 getting out and about meeting as many people in the school as possible, so don’t be surprised if I turn up in your class to introduce myself and talk about staying healthy!
Hi my name is Linclon and this is Owen. We are Daily PE leaders. We are hosting the Dance Event in week 4. We are looking forward to dancing to our favourite songs:

The daily PEleaders are looking forward to teaching the younger students – shot putt, discus, 100m, 70m, long jump and vortex. We will be starting to practice athletics in Daily PE. Good Luck to all participants.
Tasmanian Jack Jumpers NBL players came to Port Dalrymple to take a Basketball clinic with the year 5/6 students. Jack and Dan also participated as they are the coaches of our basketball teams.
On Thursday 14th October some of the year 5/6 students were lucky enough to meet three of the Jack Jumpers. Their names were Fabijan, Jack and Nikita Mikhailovskii.
We played some games such as golden child, shooting and trying not flinch. The winners of the games received a downball, badge and t-shirt from the players.
Everyone who attended the clinic got a basketball guernsey to keep and a poster. We were also able to have the guernsey signed by the players. The group photo was on the Port Dalrymple Facebook Page.
This Friday coming is our first game in the mini tournament of Basketball against South Georgetown Primary School, which is very exciting. We will be playing every Friday from 12.30pm – 2pm until week 8. The coaches, Jack and Dan, will be focussing on teaching us specific rules such as travelling violations, fouls (body, hand), double dribble and carry violations.
We are all looking forward to gaining more skills and learning how to work as a team.

COVID-19 Vaccinations for Students Aged 12 and Over
The Tasmanian Government is working hard to provide the COVID-19 vaccination to all Tasmanian’s aged 12 and above.
As you may be aware there have been a number of clinics run in colleges to vaccinate students in years 11 and 12. There will also be a small number of regional high schools that will host a vaccine clinic but this is not something that will be occurring at high schools in larger population centres at this point in time.
However, there are a number of different options available for parents to arrange for students aged 12 and above to be vaccinated, these include:
- At one of the community clinics across the state. Appointments can be made by visiting coronavirus.tas.gov.au/booking or calling the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
- At participating GPs - contact your local GP directly to make a booking.
- At selected pharmacies - find one near you at com.au
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family and the wider community from COVID-19. Don’t wait. Vaccinate.
Young people under the age of 16 are encouraged to attend their vaccination appointment with a parent or guardian.
There are a number of places where you are able to find more information in relation to the COVID-19 vaccine. You may like to look at this information with your child to support them in understanding more about the vaccination:
- Information from the Australian Government about COVID-19 vaccines
- Information from the Tasmanian Government about COVID-19 vaccines
- Information from the Western Australia Government through a video presented by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki which answers common questions and dispel myths about COVID-19 vaccines.
