Welcome Students
This week we welcome students in Years 7-10 back to school. We wish to congratulate all students on their motivation, behaviour and commitment to learning. It’s wonderful to see so many students wearing full school uniform. Each fortnight we will continue to publish photos of students engaged in learning in their classes.
Term 2
In Term 2 teachers have been busy collating students learning and assessing students’ knowledge, understandings and skills. Adjustments have been made to the 2020 mid-year reporting requirements, due to the impact of COVID-19. Before the end of July teachers will be contacting parents/guardians to communicate the students’ progress in learning and provide information on how the student has settled back into school. Further information will be provided before the end of term.
Secondhand Uniform
The school is in need of secondhand uniforms. If you have donations they will be greatly appreciated and can be left at the general office.
School Values
Our school values are Respect, Growth, Aspiration and Courage. Each term our school will be focusing on one of the values and developing an understanding of what this value reflects in our learning and work together. In sector assemblies’ students are recognised for displaying the school values.
The school values are -
Aspiration – creating a culture of high expectations and achievement
Respect – respecting ourselves, others, our past and our environment
Courage – accepting challenges and embracing opportunities
Growth – improving by always learning and finding better ways to do things

All Senior Students have now returned back to face to face classes. All subjects including the VET Hospitality and Building and Construction courses have resumed with enthusiastic students and staff extending themselves after the forced break.
During the break students continued to learn via online resources and through regular contact with teachers which has included phone calls, email and video conferences for individuals and entire classes. Through the dedication of both staff and students, focus has stayed on all students attaining their TCE on completion of Year 12.
At Port Dalrymple School we currently have four school based apprentices. Each of these eager learners spend time in the work force focusing on ‘on the job’ training and the explicit skills needed in their chosen occupation. The remainder of their week is spent at school with a focus on literacy and numeracy and the attainment of their TCE.
We encourage students moving through Port Dalrymple who are interested in an apprenticeship pathway to consider a school based apprenticeship as part of their transition to the workforce.

Port Dalrymple School understands the importance of providing healthy food and drinks to the students in Kinder to Year 12 from the school canteen.
The school canteen aims to develop student understandings on the importance of healthy eating and provides a range of options for students to eat at lunch and recess time. Nutrition is important to health throughout life, especially during times of rapid growth and development, which is prominent in the school years.
Over the coming months the canteen menu will be reviewed and the menu will change to ensure we meet the ‘Bronze’ standard of accreditation. Please be aware that this will include providing a wider variety of snack options for students and limiting foods and drinks with a high sugar content.
A revised school canteen menu will be published soon.
Our Canteen Purpose and Aims
- To promote healthy food options that foster good health in times of rapid growth and development
- To provide attractively presented, nutritious food and drink options at reasonable prices
- To demonstrate high standards of hygiene in relation to food preparation, storage, serving and documentation within the canteen environment
- To provide practical learning experiences involving healthy food choices that link with classroom learning
- To become accredited with the TSCA’s School Canteen Accreditation to the Bronze standard
Breakfast Club at Port Dalrymple School operates Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Thank you to our Junior Student Leaders
Staff Profile Laura Love, School Psychologist
Laura has worked for the Department for seven “wonderful” years as a School Psychologist, with experience prior to this working across counselling, communications, facilitating learning, behavioural therapy, and rehabilitation. Originally from Sydney, she studied at Western Sydney University where she was awarded the Vice-Chancellors Leadership Scholarship and then moved to the Gold Coast where she completed her Postgraduate studies in Psychology at Bond University (whilst working as a commercial model, which was a lot of fun!).
Laura loves her work as a School Psychologist in Tasmania, working across several schools in the north of the state. “Working intimately with children, families and educators is such a privilege, and I really enjoy supporting the team around students to help them carve out a brighter future,” Laura says. “It’s a great feeling to be part of school communities, and make lasting and meaningful change to the lives of others. I honestly believe it’s one of the best jobs out there!”
Laura says every day is different and rewarding, and she is passionate about helping students who are disengaged, not attending school or not able to set foot on school grounds to come back to school full time, be successful learners and thrive. “Our education system has a profound impact on shaping future generations here in Tasmania, and it is a great way to have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.”
“I find that working with children keeps you playful, curious and focused on what is important. It is also very cool that I carry a briefcase full of toys to work every day, not everybody can say they do that!”
Laura was also part of a specialist leadership team from 2014-2018, the Respectful School Support Team, which worked across the north of Tasmania focusing on student behaviour. “There are so many opportunities for career progression and working more intensively on complex issues, and I have loved having that variety available to me, but craved coming back to school psychology after awhile.” When asked whether she would recommend the Department of Education as a great place to work, Laura says she absolutely would. “Go for it – apply now! Whether you are an early career graduate or you bring a wealth of experience from other services, never underestimate how the unique qualities you bring to this role can make a positive difference in a child’s life.”
“Tasmania is also an amazing place to live and work – my husband and I are both Sydney-siders and nature lovers at heart so we love the balance that living in Tasmania brings compared to congested, fast-paced cities. For us, the Apple Isle has been a fantastic place to purchase a property, raise our children and grow our own veggies.”
Dear Parent/Guardian
On behalf of the Port Dalrymple School community we would like to thank South32 and the George Town Council for providing the financial resource that has enabled the school to purchase laptop computers for students.
The initiative will ensure students, primarily in Years 3-9, will have a device for learning which they can take home. It will enable students to stay connected to their learning, to the wider school community and provide opportunities for teachers to support and extend students learning throughout the year.
Families of students in Years 3-9 who do not have a suitable device for learning can ring the general office to loan a school laptop. The general office will complete a loan form for the student and then the device can be collected at any time from Monday – Friday during school hours 9.00am-3.00pm. Please ensure you follow social distancing procedures when you enter the school administration area.
This is a wonderful initiative for the families in George Town.
Principal
If you have a Scholastic Bookclub, you would like to order. Can you please return to the office by Friday 19th June.
During PE, across the whole school during Term 2 and into the start of Term 3, we will be participating in cross-country training and aligned education around physical activity.
Due to the period of home schooling and some current limitations around sports and the use of equipment in physical education, the Port Dalrymple HPE team have planned to conduct our cross-country unit when high school students return to school in week 7 of Term 2. Our plan is to hopefully run a cross-country carnival early in Term 3, provided current Covid-19 restrictions have been eased by then.
With this in mind, can you please ensure students bring to school PE gear that is suitable for cross-country e.g. running shoes, shorts/track pants, T-shirt/sports jumper. The course is in good condition, however can be susceptible to wet and muddy conditions, therefore a change of clothes is required. Conditions are variable at this time of year so warm clothing is also recommended.
All students are required to participate in the cross-country, whether they are running, jogging or walking. It really is all about having fun being active and doing their best. If a medical condition prevents a student from participating, a doctor’s certificate will be required.
Regards
PDS HPE Team
In 2020, Port Dalrymple School has been in the process of updating the sport’s uniforms. With the support of our principal, Ms Jeanna Bolton, the HPE team have
been busy designing and ordering selected sports uniforms that needed replacing, or we simply didn’t have.
Our first job was our netball uniform. These 40 dresses and sets of bibs will cater for the varying school sport rosters and events we are involved in across Years 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10. We are also in the process of ordering new and coordinated athletics singlets and basketball jerseys and shorts that will benefit both our primary and high school students.
Although 2020 school sports rosters and events have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are looking forward to our students proudly wearing our school’s sporting uniforms some time in the future.
George Town Council Kids Activity Portal
The George Town Council has created the Kids Activity Portal, https://georgetown.tas.gov.au/kids-activity-portal/, showcasing many fun and educational activities to keep both minds and hands busy during these unprecedented times. It is also an interactive educational learning tool for both parents and children of various ages.
There is currently a photography competition running through the portal. Photos are a great way of capturing or expressing how we feel. Why not show how you feel about being back at school, or catching up with your friends and family that you may not have seen for some time. There are multiple prizes to be won.
All details can be found here: https://georgetown.tas.gov.au/competition
